1789-1861. English social reformer. He
opposed child labour and the Poor Law 1834,
which restricted relief, and was largely
responsible for securing the Factory Act 1833
and the Ten Hours Act 1847. He was born in
Leeds, and was given the nickname of the
`Factory King' for his achievements on behalf
of workers.
